Karel Barták, a Czech journalist and former Czech News Agency correspondent, died on August 27, 2026, aged 72.
He worked in the ČTK foreign desk from 1978 to 2006 and spent part of the 1980s and early 1990s as a correspondent in Paris and Moscow. From 1995 to 2006, he reported from Brussels, where he followed the negotiations over the Czech Republic’s accession to NATO and the European Union for Czech readers.
After leaving ČTK, he went on to hold senior positions in different departments of the European Commission from 2006 to 2018. Barták was also active as a publicist and diplomat, and he studied at the Faculty of Law of Charles University.
