Born on April 4, 1950, in North Paravur, he represented the Chalakudy Lok Sabha constituency in Kerala and was associated with the Indian National Congress. Before entering Parliament, Dhanapalan was active in student politics through the Kerala Students Union, serving as unit president at SN High School, North Paravur, and later as Ernakulam district secretary. He also served as District Congress Committee president for Ernakulam and studied at Sree Narayana Mangalam College, Maliankara, and Union Christian College, Aluva, where he completed a B.Sc. in Chemistry and was college union chairman.
