Kathleen Daisy Miller, the Canadian writer known as K.
D. Miller, died of cancer on September 14, 2026, aged 75.
Born on March 6, 1951, Miller studied at the University of Guelph and the University of British Columbia. Her first short story, “Now, Voyager,” won Flare magazine’s literary contest in 1981, after which she published short fiction in literary magazines for a number of years. Her debut collection, A Litany in Time of Plague, appeared in 1994, followed by Give Me Your Answer in 1999. Miller later published All Saints, a short story collection that was shortlisted for the Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize in 2014. The recognition placed the collection among the finalists for one of Canada’s prominent fiction prizes. Her career also included a 2021 academic honour: the United Theological College at McGill University awarded her a Doctor of Divinity degree honoris causa on May 5 of that year. Miller’s published work spanned short stories and novels, and her writing career included decades of literary magazine publication before and alongside her collections. Her education at two Canadian universities and the successive appearance of her collections marked key milestones in a career that began with the Flare contest win.
