Born in Boston on Jan. 1, 1933, Fraumeni studied at Harvard College, Duke University School of Medicine and the Harvard School of Public Health. He went on to medical training at Johns Hopkins Hospital and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center before joining the National Cancer Institute, where his research with Frederick Pei Li helped identify families with a heightened susceptibility to cancer. Their work later led to the characterization of Li-Fraumeni syndrome and to discoveries involving inherited mutations in the p53 tumor suppressor gene. Fraumeni’s career brought honors including the Charles S. Mott Prize, election as a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and an AACR Award for Lifetime Achievement in Cancer Research.
