Jorge Ruffinelli, a Uruguayan literary critic and academic, died on February 4, 2026, at the age of 82.

Born in Montevideo on December 16, 1943, he was an associate professor at the University of Buenos Aires in 1973, a professor at the Universidad Veracruzana in 1974, and a full professor at Stanford University in 1986. In his youth, he was a disciple of Ángel Rama and contributed to the weekly Marcha.

He was also regarded as an expert in Latin American cinema and served on juries at several international festivals.
