Born in Yeovil, Somerset, on February 3, 1944, he attended Marlborough College, where he captained the First XI, before going on to Christ’s College, Cambridge. An opening bowler, he played for Cambridge University from 1963 to 1965 and earned his blue in 1965.
His best first-class return was 5 for 28 against Somerset in 1965, and he later became a barrister in London.
