John Sheffield, a British physicist, died on July 22, 2026, aged 89.
Born in London on December 15, 1936, he studied at Imperial College London, where he earned a BSc in 1958, and later received an MSc from the University of London in 1962 and a PhD in physics in 1966. After completing his studies, he joined the Fusion Research Center at the University of Texas at Austin.
In 1977, he moved to the fusion division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, where he later became a fellow of the American Physical Society in 1981. He went on to serve as division head from 1988 to 1994, and also held senior roles as director for energy programs and executive director of the Joint Institute for Energy and Environment.
