Fabian, an American astronaut and Air Force officer, died on May 21, 2026, at age 87. Born John McCreary Fabian on January 28, 1939, in Goose Creek, Texas, he flew two Space Shuttle missions and worked on the development of the Shuttle’s robotic arm.
He later led the Air Force’s space operations. Fabian considered Pullman, Washington, his hometown and retired to Port Ludlow, Washington, in 1998. He also helped form the Hood Canal Coalition in 2002, an environmental watchdog group.
