John Loring, the American fashion design director who spent three decades guiding design at Tiffany & Co., died on June 9, 2026, at age 86.
Born John Robbins Loring in Chicago on November 23, 1939, he was educated at Yale University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in English literature in 1960, and later studied for four years at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. Loring served as design director at Tiffany from 1979 to 2009 and later held the title of design director emeritus.
Before joining the jeweler, he was New York bureau chief of Architectural Digest and one of the magazine’s principal editorial contributors. He also taught art at the graduate school of the University of California and wrote numerous books on Tiffany and art, while his prints and paintings were exhibited in Europe and the United States.
