Born in Te Awamutu on November 8, 1932, he stood in seven Test matches between 1974 and 1981 and four One Day Internationals between 1975 and 1982. His career included two matches in the contentious West Indies tour of New Zealand in 1979–80, and he also officiated in 48 first-class matches and 12 List A games between 1964 and 1984, with many of those appointments at Seddon Park in Hamilton and Eden Park in Auckland.
