He was 77. Known as John Edwin “Jay” Steele, he was born in Detroit on June 3, 1949. Steele earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Detroit in 1971 and received his Juris Doctor from the University of Detroit College of Law in 1973. He later worked as a law clerk in the Wayne County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office in Detroit from 1972 to 1974, then served as an assistant prosecuting attorney there from 1974 to 1977 before joining the federal bench in Florida in 2000.
