Jim Sutton, an American Hall of Fame stock contractor, died on September 3, 2026, aged 91.
Born James Louverne Sutton Jr. on April 20, 1935, in Hughes County, South Dakota, he was raised on his family’s ranch and later graduated from Onida High School.
Sutton went on to study animal husbandry at South Dakota State University, where he also played college basketball and took part in rodeo. In 1968, he and his father founded the Sutton Rodeo Company in South Dakota, building a breeding program that became known for PRCA bucking horses. Sutton later founded the Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo in Rapid City in 1978 and served as a stock contractor for the National High School Rodeo at the Red River Valley in Fargo in 1979.
