He spent most of his adult life in Spruce Pine, North Carolina, and was a juried member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild in both ceramics and marquetry. Born James Alexander Sockwell on April 20, 1942, in Tuscumbia, Alabama, he studied art at Middle Tennessee State University before operating Tanglewood Pottery in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
In 1972, he moved with his family to Spruce Pine and opened a pottery studio in Gillespie Gap, where he worked for decades.
