Louis Cardinals and Chicago White Sox, died on September 25, 2026, aged 84. Born in Covington on October 9, 1941, Long entered professional baseball as a pitcher after signing with the Cardinals in 1959, but struggled in the low minors before converting to first base in 1961 to make better use of his bat.
That change led to a productive stretch in the minors, including 30 home runs for Tulsa in 1962, and earned him a call to the majors at age 84. In the big leagues, he appeared with St. Louis in 1963 and then served as a pinch hitter and reserve at first base and right field for the White Sox in 1964.
