Jeffrey Lane dead at age 71, American television writer and playwright

Jeffrey Lane, an American television writer and playwright, died on May 20, 2026, at age 71.

He wrote for the television series Ryan’s Hope and Mad About You, and was also known for writing the book for the Broadway musical Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, which was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2005. Lane also wrote the book for Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, which received three Tony Award nominations and several Drama Desk Award nominations.

His television credits also included Lou Grant and The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd.
