Williamson, an American academic and economic historian, died on August 29, 2026, aged 90. He was the Laird Bell Professor of Economics emeritus at Harvard University and also held appointments as an honorary fellow in the Department of Economics at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research and a research fellow at the Center for Economic and Policy Research.

Born in New England and educated at Stanford University, he was widely recognized for his work on comparative economic history, the history of the international economy and development. Williamson also served as president of the Economic History Association from 1994 to 1995. He was the father of economist Hilary Hoynes.
