Born Hans Ziegler on April 19, 1934, in Thun, he built a public career that combined politics, sociology and teaching. He served as a member of the Swiss Parliament for the Social Democrats from 1981 to 1999 and later became vice-president of the Advisory Committee to the United Nations Human Rights Council.

Ziegler also taught sociology at the University of Geneva and at the Sorbonne in Paris, and his work took him to several international and academic posts, including with the United Nations.
