Jean Borella, a French philosopher and theologian, died October 11, 2026, aged 96.

Born in Nancy on May 21, 1930, he received a Catholic education and attended traditional public secondary schools, which strengthened his sense that he would defend the faith. By 14, he had understood the Cartesian proof of God’s existence.

His father, an Italian who served in military aviation, died in an air crash in 1937; his mother was French, from Lorraine. Borella began university studies in Nancy in 1950, where philosophy professors Georges Vallin and Guy Bugault influenced his intellectual development. Vallin, a French orientalist and philosopher, primarily taught Vedanta, while Bugault taught Hindu and Buddhist philosophy. Borella graduated with a degree in philosophy in 1953, the same year he became familiar with René Guénon’s work. His writing as a Christian philosopher and theologian drew on ancient and Christian Neoplatonism, as well as the Traditionalist School associated with Guénon and Frithjof Schuon.
