Jean Bonfils dead at age 96, French Roman Catholic prelate, bishop of Viviers, bishop of Nice

Jean Bonfils, the French Roman Catholic prelate who served as bishop of Viviers from 1992 to 1998 and bishop of Nice from 1998 to 2005, died on May 12, 2026, at age 96.

Born in Montpellier, France, on February 15, 1930, he was ordained a priest in 1954 after entering the Society of African Missions. He later taught theology in Lyon and at the Major Seminary of Ouidah in Benin, served as master of novices in Chanly, Belgium, and held leadership roles within the Missions africaines of Lyon.

He was also secretary general of the Conference of Major Superiors of France from 1978 to 1984 and served as Apostolic Administrator of Ajaccio from 2011 to 2012.
