Jean Allaire, a Canadian lawyer and politician, died on August 27, 2026, at age 96.
A French Canadian from Laval, Quebec, he was best known for authoring the Allaire Report in 1991, a document that helped shape Quebec political debate. In 1994, he became the first leader of the Action démocratique du Québec, a fiscally conservative and autonomist party, but stepped down within months because of health reasons and was succeeded by Mario Dumont.
Before helping to found the ADQ, Allaire was an influential member of the Quebec Liberal Party and, with Dumont, helped organize Liberal dissidents in the “Network of Liberals for the No,” which opposed the Charlottetown Accord.
