Born in Stockholm on August 4, 1943, he studied and later worked at Karolinska Institutet, where he was associated with biology, biochemistry and medical nutrition. In 2008, he moved to Houston, Texas, and the following year a $5.5 million Texas research grant helped establish the Center of Nuclear Receptors and Cell Signaling at the University of Houston under his leadership.
