Redfield, an American academic known for his work on Homer and Herodotus, died on May 28, 2026. He was 91.

Redfield’s best-known book was Nature and Culture in the Iliad: The Tragedy of Hector, published by the University of Chicago Press in 1975, which examined the Iliad through an anthropological lens and focused on Hector’s role in the poem. He served on the faculty of the University of Chicago, where he was a member of the Department of Classical Languages and Literature and the Committee on Social Thought. Redfield earned his undergraduate degree from Chicago in 1954, studied at New College, Oxford, from 1956 to 1958, and received his Ph.D. from the university in 1961. He retired in 2016.
