Michael Bishop, an American immunologist and academic administrator who shared the 1989 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine and served as chancellor of the University of California, San Francisco from 1998 to 2009, died on March 20, 2026. He was 90.

Bishop was a faculty member at UCSF and shared the Nobel Prize with Harold E. Varmus.

John Michael Bishop (February 22, 1936 – March 20, 2026) was an American immunologist and microbiologist who shared the 1989 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Harold E. Varmus. He was a faculty member at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), where he also served as chancellor from 1998 to 2009.
