Known in Korean as Jang Hun, he was born in Hiroshima on June 19, 1940, and spent a 23-season career in Nippon Professional Baseball with the Toei Flyers, Nittaku Home Flyers, Nippon-Ham Fighters, Yomiuri Giants and Lotte Orions. A prolific hitter, Harimoto held the record for the most hits in Japanese professional baseball.

He was later recognized with induction into the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame.
