Stevenson, an American business theorist who became the Sarofim-Rock Baker Foundation Professor Emeritus at Harvard University, died September 27, 2026, aged 85. Born June 27, 1941, he studied at Stanford University and Harvard Business School before joining Harvard’s academic community.

He began teaching entrepreneurship at Harvard Business School in 1982 and held academic and leadership positions at the school and university until retiring in 2011. His Harvard posts included senior associate dean at HBS, vice provost for resources and planning, and chairman of Harvard Business Publishing, combining school-level leadership with university-wide responsibilities. Stevenson defined entrepreneurship as “the pursuit of opportunity beyond the resources you currently control,” a formulation INC called “the best answer ever.” Forbes described him as Harvard Business School’s “lion of entrepreneurship” in a 2011 article. He wrote eight books and 41 articles and raised more than $600 million in philanthropic support for Harvard initiatives in business, science, health care and student life.
