Born Alexander Ivanovich Matyushin on November 16, 1954, he was a Russian poet, singer-songwriter, and hieromonk of the Russian Orthodox Church. He was born in Ryabchovsk village in Bryansk Oblast, studied in the Philology Department at the University of Elista, and later worked as a school teacher.
In 1983, he was tonsured at the Pskov-Caves Monastery and ordained in 1985. He served in parishes in Bryansk Oblast and at the Kiev Pechersk Lavra, published 19 books of poetry, and joined the Writers Union of Russia.
