Helmut Lethen, the German Germanist and cultural scholar, died on August 13, 2026, aged 87.
Born in Mönchengladbach in 1939, he studied at universities in Bonn, Amsterdam and Berlin after volunteering for the Bundeswehr following high school. Lethen became known as a left-wing student activist, including among those who disrupted the opening of the Deutscher Germanistentag in West Berlin in 1968, and he belonged to the Maoist party KPD-AO until 1975.
He earned his doctorate in 1970 on Neue Sachlichkeit 1924–1932. Studies in the Literature of White Socialism, taught at the Free University of Berlin from 1971 to 1976, and later held a professorship in Utrecht from 1977 to 1995. In 1995 he moved to Rostock, where he took up a chair in modern German literature, and he was also recognized with the Leipzig Book Fair Prize for non-fiction.
