Born Heinz Kluger on September 10, 1932, in Bytom, then Beuthen in Germany, he built a career in Israeli broadcasting that began in 1956 and stretched across decades of television history. Widely associated with Channel 1, he became known to generations of viewers as “Mr.
Television”. Yavin also worked as a film director and documentary filmmaker, and his career was recognized with the Israel Prize. He studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the University of Haifa. He is survived by his son, Jonathan Yavin.
