Born in Colorado City, Texas, he attended Sam Houston High School in Arlington before playing college football at Texas Christian University, where he earned a degree in secondary education. Morriss went on to spend 15 seasons as an offensive lineman in the National Football League, with the Philadelphia Eagles from 1973 to 1983 and the New England Patriots from 1984 to 1987.
He started at center for the Eagles in Super Bowl XV and later coached at the collegiate level, serving as head coach at the University of Kentucky from 2001 to 2002 and at Baylor University from 2003 to 2007.
