Born Giles Bryan Chichester in London, he was educated at Westminster School and Christ Church, Oxford. He represented South West England in the European Parliament from 1999 until his retirement in 2014, having previously served as MEP for Devon and East Plymouth from 1994 to 1999.
In 2011, he was elected vice-president of the European Parliament, succeeding Silvana Koch-Mehrin. He was the son of Sir Francis Chichester and Sheila Mary Craven, and was also known as Giles Bryan Chichester.
