Cave, an American author and CIA agent, died on August 14, 2026, aged 97. Cave was a retired CIA operations officer and an authority on Iran who later took part in the Iran-Contra affair at the request of CIA Director William J.

Casey. Born in New Jersey, he attended Milton Hershey School, graduating in 1947 and later being named its Alumnus of the Year in 2001. He studied Middle Eastern studies at Princeton University from 1952 to 1956 before joining the CIA after graduation. In the mid-1970s, he served in Tehran as deputy CIA station chief and used the agency pseudonym Joseph Adlesick in the late 1970s.
