Born Frederick Anthony Jackson in Manhattan, he was originally from New York City and began his professional music career in the late 1970s with Mystic Merlin, a California funk band. His recording career began in 1979 and continued through 2026.
Jackson’s best-known songs included “You Are My Lady” and “Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake),” both released in 1985, followed by “Have You Ever Loved Somebody” and “Jam Tonight” in 1986. “Do Me Again,” released in 1990, was another of his R&B and soul hits.
