Fred Claire, the American baseball executive who served as vice president and general manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers, died October 5, 2026, aged 91.

He worked in several capacities for the Dodgers from 1969 to 1998, including as general manager from 1987 through 1998. Born in Jamestown, Ohio, on October 5, 1935, Claire moved with his family to Torrance, California, in 1950.

His father owned and operated a drugstore. Claire graduated from Torrance High School, attended El Camino College and earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from San Jose State University. Before joining the Dodgers, he worked as a sports editor and writer at California newspapers, including the Whittier Daily News, the Pomona Progress-Bulletin and the Long Beach Independent Press-Telegram. His newspaper work spanned the late 1950s and 1960s, preceding his move into baseball administration. Claire recounted his career in his 2011 book, Fred Claire: My 30 Years in Dodger Blue.
