Fabio Mussi, the Italian politician who served as minister of university and research from 2006 to 2008 and as a deputy from 1992 to 2008, died on September 3, 2026, aged 78.
Born in Piombino in 1948, he studied at the University of Pisa and the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa before joining the Italian Communist Party in 1966. He later moved through the Democrats of the Left and became a founding figure in the Democratic Left, before joining Left Ecology Freedom and, after that party’s dissolution, the Italian Left.
Over the course of his parliamentary career, he also served as senior vice-president of the Chamber of Deputies and represented a strand of the Italian left that evolved over several decades.
