Born in Granite City, Illinois, on June 22, 1953, she developed an early interest in performing, studying dance as a child and singing for local veterans organizations. She later studied at the College of Wooster under Karl Trump, then at the University of Illinois with Grace Wilson and David Lloyd before joining the Houston Opera Studio, where she worked with Elena Nikolaidi.
Over her career, Mills appeared on major opera stages including the Wiener Staatsoper, the English National Opera, the Metropolitan Opera and La Scala.
