Eddie Carvery Canadian social activist dead at age -1

Eddie Carvery, a Canadian social activist, died on February 16, 2026.

He was from Africville, Nova Scotia, where he became known for protesting the destruction of the small, mainly Black Halifax community in the 1960s as part of an urban renewal project after years of neglect and poor services. Carvery began his protest at the site in 1970 and lived on and off in what became known as Seaview Park for more than 25 years.

He later continued his protest on adjacent land and remained on the grounds of Africville in later years, including behind the reconstructed Africville Church.

Eddie Carvery (October 5, 1946 – February 14, 2026) was a Canadian social activist from Africville, Nova Scotia. The small, mainly black community in Halifax was destroyed by the city in the 1960s as an “urban renewal” project, after years of neglect and poor services.
