Denys Tremblay, a Canadian artist and micronational leader who served as king of L’Anse-Saint-Jean, died October 2, 2026, aged 75.

Born in Chicoutimi, Quebec, on February 5, 1951, Tremblay was the eighth and youngest child in his family. His father was a cabinetmaker and industrialist who served as mayor of Rivière-du-Moulin.

Tremblay pursued art studies at Université Laval in Quebec City before continuing at Goldsmiths College of the University of London on an excellence scholarship from the Quebec government. He was professor emeritus at the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi. His artistic work was transdisciplinary, and he was among the early thinkers of peripheralism. Tremblay devised the “really-made,” a concept inspired by Marcel Duchamp’s ready-made. It takes its name from the practice of designating an ordinary object as a work of art through the artist’s decision; Tremblay developed his concept through his alter ego, the Illustre Inconnu. The ready-made emerged in the early 20th century and helped establish the foundations of conceptual art.
