Doty, an American jurist who served as a judge of the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota, died on June 27, 2026, at age 96. Born David Singleton Doty in Anoka, Minnesota, he earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota in 1952 and a law degree from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1961.
In the years between those degrees, he served as a captain in the United States Marine Corps from 1952 to 1958. After law school, he practiced privately in St. Paul and later in Minneapolis. President Ronald Reagan nominated him to the federal bench in 1987, and he received his commission later that year. Doty assumed senior status in 1998.
