David Morelock dead at age 94, American opera director

David Morelock, an American opera director, died on May 13, 2026, at the age of 94.

Born July 16, 1931, he was an American stage director of opera whose career centered on the New Orleans Opera Association. After a brief career as a singer and while also teaching French, he staged his first opera, “Les pêcheurs de perles,” in 1971.

Over the following decades, he directed traditional productions of works including “Ariadne auf Naxos,” “Lohengrin,” “Manon Lescaut,” and “Macbeth” in New Orleans. He also staged “Les contes d’Hoffmann” for Connecticut Opera in 1982 and “Carmen” for Seattle Opera the same year.
