David Kahler

David Kahler, an American architect and photographer, died on May 14, 2026, at age 89.

Kahler led the Milwaukee-based firm Kahler Slater for much of his career. His work included the Golda Meir Library at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee in 1967, two expansions to the Milwaukee Art Museum in 1975 and 2001, the latter with Santiago Calatrava, the Haggerty Museum of Art in 1984, and the phased renovation of the Wisconsin State Capitol from 1991 to 2002.

Born on February 14, 1937, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, he grew up in Chadds Ford. After earning a master’s degree from Princeton University in 1962, he taught at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign before returning to Milwaukee in 1965.
