Born in Detroit on March 1, 1950, he grew up in Pontiac, Michigan, and attended Waterford Kettering High School before enrolling at Wayne State University in Detroit. Marsh began his career as a rock critic and editor at Creem magazine, which he helped start, and later wrote for publications including Newsday, The Village Voice and Rolling Stone.
He also wrote numerous books on music and musicians, largely focused on rock, and served as a committee member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
