Hickman served on the state’s highest court from 1977 to 1990, after building his legal career in Arkansas. Born in Searcy, he attended Harding College, now Harding University, before transferring to the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, where he earned his law degree in 1958.
He later became chancellor of Arkansas and won election to the Supreme Court in 1976 as a Democrat, running unopposed in the general election.
