Born in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, on May 8, 1947, she studied piano from age 5, played violin and began singing lessons at 12. She studied French and Latin at Royal Holloway, University of London, and took singing lessons in Grenoble during a year in France as part of her degree.
Lott made her operatic debut at the City of London Festival in 1974 as Seleuce in Handel’s Tolomeo and appeared the following year as Pamina in Mozart’s The Magic Flute at the English National Opera.
