Curtis Flowers, an American man who was wrongfully imprisoned, died October 7, 2026, aged 56.

Born Curtis Giovanni Flowers on May 29, 1970, in Winona, Mississippi, he spent more than 22 years in prison while being tried six times for the same four killings. Flowers was accused of shooting four people inside the Tardy Furniture store in Winona on July 16, 1996.

He was first convicted in 1997, beginning a sequence of trials led by the same prosecutor, Montgomery County District Attorney Doug Evans. The earliest proceedings included convictions for the aggravated murder and robbery of the store’s owner and for the murder of an employee; those verdicts were overturned by the Mississippi Supreme Court because of prosecutorial misconduct. Four of the six trials resulted in convictions, all later overturned. In five trials, Evans sought the death penalty, and Flowers spent more than 20 years on death row at the Parchman division of Mississippi State Penitentiary. His case drew scrutiny over racial bias in jury selection. In 2016, the U.S. Supreme Court directed lower courts to review evidence of such bias, and after the Mississippi Supreme Court reaffirmed the convictions, the justices took up the case again. In June 2019, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the murder convictions by a 7–2 vote in Flowers v. Mississippi.
