Colin Wilson, the Australian heavyweight boxer known as “Kid Coalminer,” died on October 5, 2026, aged 54.
Born in Palmerston North, New Zealand, on April 18, 1972, Wilson made his professional debut against Jason Coaker on November 13, 1992, winning by knockout. It was the first of more than 20 knockout victories.
He was also known as Col Wilson, with Kid Coalminer another name associated with him. Wilson’s Australian heavyweight title career came in three spells. He first held the title from February 17, 1997, until January 31, 1998. He regained it on September 19, 2003, and remained champion until November 2, 2007. A third reign began October 3, 2009, extending his tenure as champion through August 20, 2010. That final title spell ended in a loss to Justin Whitehead, who was 39 at the time. For many years Wilson also fought with Fred Brophys Boxing Troupe, described as the last tent boxing show in the world. In those appearances he used another ring name, “The Birdsville Butcher.”
