Clarence Carter dead at age 90, public figure

Clarence Carter, an American singer-songwriter, died on May 14, 2026.

He was 90. Born Clarence George Carter in Montgomery, Alabama, on January 14, 1936, he was blind from birth and attended the Alabama School for the Blind in Talladega before earning a Bachelor of Science degree in music from Alabama State University in Montgomery in August 1960.

His professional career began in the early 1960s, and his best-known songs included “Slip Away,” “Back Door Santa,” “Patches” and “Strokin’.”
