Christian Bernard, the French art curator who directed the Villa Arson in Nice and later became the first director of MAMCO in Geneva, died on August 6, 2026, aged 76.

Born in Strasbourg on February 9, 1950, Bernard studied philosophy and letters at the University of Strasbourg before building a career in exhibition curation. He took up the MAMCO post on September 22, 1994, and worked there with artists including John Armleder and Martin Kippenberger.

His later work also included artistic direction for Line B of Strasbourg’s transport network. Bernard was a Knight of the National Order of Merit and received the Grand Prix de Poésie.
