Cheikh Hamidou Kane, the Senegalese writer best known for L’Aventure ambiguë, died on October 2, 2026, aged 98.

Born in Matam in 1928, he became one of Senegal’s best-known literary figures through the 1961 novel, which follows a Fulani boy sent to study in France and examines the strain between Western education and African and Islamic roots. The book won the Grand prix littéraire d’Afrique noire in 1962.

Kane later served in the Senegalese government after returning home in 1959, and he also worked as an official of UNICEF in Lagos and Abidjan. His later novel, Les gardiens du temple, was published in 1995.
