Carol Walker, an American mathematician and mathematics textbook author, died on February 25, 2026.
Born Carol Lee Walker on August 19, 1935, in Martinez, California, she studied music education at the University of Colorado Boulder and later earned graduate training in mathematics at the University of Denver and New Mexico State University. Her early research in the 1960s and 1970s focused on abelian groups, and in the 1990s her interests shifted to fuzzy logic and fuzzy control systems.
After postdoctoral research at the Institute for Advanced Study, she joined New Mexico State University in 1964, where she became a full professor in 1972. She chaired the Department of Mathematical Sciences from 1979 to 1993 and served as associate dean of arts and sciences until her retirement in 1996.
