Carlyto Lassa, the Congolese singer-songwriter, guitarist and evangelical pastor, died on August 31, 2026, aged 65.
Born Charles Ndombasi Lassa in Kongo Central in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, he became known professionally as Carlyto Lassa, and also as Carlito or Carlitto. His career began in the 1970s with groups including Singa Mwambe, Les Bourgeois and Bisengo, before he moved on to Tout Choc Oka and, in 1984, joined Franco Luambo’s TPOK Jazz.
He was associated with Congolese rumba and later shifted to gospel music and evangelical ministry after converting to Christianity, recording works such as La Reconnaissance and Confiance – Kili Kili Azongi.
